New wagon type featuring “Italy capability“ by BLG AutoRail

Patented car transport wagon of BLG AutoRail (Bremen) is able to carry SUVs in double-stack system on the international rail routes to Italy

There is broad interest arising from the automotive industry on the occasion of the presentation of a new car transport wagon at the BLG car terminal on 14 May in Hamburg. The special feature of the new car is its „Italy capability“. In Italy, the tunnel cross sections are smaller than in most European countries. None of the usual car trains can be loaded in double-stack with SUVs for a destination there. Similar restrictions also apply to Spain, the UK and France.

Therefore, BLG AutoRail has developed together with Greenbrier, an American wagon manufacturer, a new type of wagon which makes this possible. There is nothing comparable in the world and therefore BLG AutoRail has a patent on its new development. The „Italy capability“ has been achieved by smaller wheelsets and by the option of lowering both charging levels after loading.

All 1,275 wagons of BLG AutoRail are equipped with so-called whisper brakes, which means the noise of the trains during braking is well below the acceptable limit of 82 decibels. The company now has the most modern wagon fleet. In 2013 around 550,000 cars were transported environmentally friendly by rail.
