NYK Group enhances program for sustainable transport solutions

NYK Group launches CO2 calculator for international ocean and air freight container transportations:

The Japanese NYK Group has enhanced its program to create sustainable transport solutions: As of now customers can calculate online CO2 emissions for ocean and air freight container transportations. The climate-calculator can be found on www.nykgroup-e-calculator.com and was certified by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Japan.

To determine greenhouse gas emissions the user has just to indicate the loading port and the destination. In addition inland transport by truck and rail can be integrated in China and North America. The emissions data from the NYK e-calculator can be downloaded and saved. NYK had previously responded individually to inquiries from customers regarding carbon footprints data. “Inquiries have been increasing“, reports Klaus-Peter Barth, managing director NYK Line (Germany) GmbH.

“Thus the group decided to develop a tool that could allow end users to easily conduct these calculations themselves.“ Economically sustainable consumption of resources is an important element of the NYK Group’s business strategy. In the frame of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-Program the globally acting transport and logistics group defined ambitious targets and various measures. This includes the Cool Earth project launched in 2008, which targets a 10-per cent reduction of CO2 emissions per ton and nautical mile before 2013. To reach this target they developed concepts to save fuel, e.g. by improved navigation, reduction of travel speed or the use of solar energy.
