NYK Line and ICO get a new large-scale project off the ground

Pure Car Truck Carrier of NYK Line are shipping 20 tunnel drilling machines to China and Qatar ex the RoRo terminals in Antwerp and Zeebrugge

The Japanese shipping company NYK Line and their terminal subsidiary International Car Ooperators (ICO) loaded two heavy tunnel drilling machines and a vertical drilling rig via the RoRo terminals in Antwerp and Zeebrugge within only 72 hours. They were built by the German tunnel construction specialist and world market leader Herrenknecht AG as well as their subsidiary Herrenknecht Vertical.

One of the machines is destined for China, the other two units for the Emirate of Qatar. Loading was effected on the NYK Pure Car Truck carriers (PCTC) “Procyon Leader” and “Orion Leader”. The ships used by the NYK Line have a main deck with a height of up to 6,30 m and are therefore suitable for the transport of bulky deep foundation machines. In order to get the equipment, which had a total weight of almost 2.500 tons and measured 9.250 m3 as well as featuring loading heights of up to 4,50 m on board, it was loaded onto a total of 87 rolltrailers.

This spectacular shipment was the start to a more than eventful year for all partners involved in this project. Within the next twelve months, close to 20 tunnel drilling machines will be shipped by NYK  via the ICO terminals in Antwerp. The main country of destination is Qatar, which is already promoting its infrastructure  measures for the soccer world championship 2022 this year.

With their world-wide RoRo network, the shipping company NYK Line has also put their focus on project cargo besides the shipment of vehicles and construction machinery. The fleet for these operations comprises 120 RoRo ships.
