ÖBB starts expansion of Wolfurt terminal before the end of 2014

Plans for expansion of the Wolfurt terminal completed; ÖBB expects „green light“ for Vorarlberg infrastructure project by September 2014

The preparations for the expansion of the Wolfurt terminal are in the final stretch. „The test drilling has been completed. Technically, the preparations have been completed for the submission of plans,“ says Arnold Fink, project team leader of ÖBB infrastructure. On March 30 the final plans will be submitted, the construction approval is expected for September. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for December 2014, according to a statement by the company. If everything goes according to plan, the project should be completed in three phases by August 2018.

The terminal Wolfurt is not only an important element of the supply chain for Vorarlberg’s strongly export-oriented indusrty, but also an essential contribution to shifting cargo transport from road to rail. To cope with the growing cargo volume of Vorarlberg’s export industry, the new terminal needs significantly more capacity for the future. The heart of the system will be four up to 799 m container loading tracks, which can be directly called by entire container trains (no shunting required). These tracks will be equipped with two container cranes. In addition, among other things, an empty container storage with space for up to 3,500 containers will be established. A total area of approximately 20,000 m² is to be added to the current 54,000 m² site. The investment is currently calculated at EUR 50 million.
