Official start of „ISU express“ by Rail Cargo Austria

"ISU express" by Rail Cargo Austria offers rail transportation for not craneable trailers from Wels to the Turkish border

With the as they call it revolutionary transport system the ÖBB cargo transport subsidiary Rail Cargo Austria brings truck semi-trailers on track. On 19 June the new ISU service was launched. This abbreviation stands for „innovativer Sattelaufliegerumschlag“ (innovative semi-trailer handling). It is a system developed by RCA, to shift not craneable semi-trailers from the road to rail.

The first test for the new system is the "ISU express" from Wels to Stara Zagora in southern Bulgaria. The research project supported in the frame of the EU program CREAM starts with two rotations per month. The “shuttle“ takes 58 hours to cover the 1,800 kilometres distance. Each train consists of 15 double pocket wagons with maximum capacities for 30 not craneable semi-trailers. Depending on the demand situation, the offer can be increased to four rotations per month.

ISU is presented as a junction between the rolling road (ROLA) and unaccompanied combined transport. “About 85 per cent of the semi-trailers driving in Europe are not craneable and thus they could not have been transported on the rail without a tractor until now. With ISU we have now also in this segment and attractive and environmentally friendly transport concept to shift cargo transport from the road to rail“, explains Ökombi Managing Director Franz Dirnbauer.

With "ISU express" the RCA affiliate Ökombi wants to address mainly big Austrian, German and Turkish transport enterprises. “The demand is there and we are quite optimistic regarding the utilisation rate“, says Mr. Dirnbauer. The ISU train is open to all transport enterprises. The routing goes from Stara Zagora to Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary to Wels. RCA has safety certifications for own traction in all these countries.
