Parcel service provider GLS is building a new hub in the Czech Republic

New central transhipment point of GLS Czech Republic in Jihlava expected to start operation as distribution centre for Central and Eastern Europe in October 2012

GLS General Logistics Systems, provider of parcel, logistics and express services, is building a new central transhipment point in the Czech Republic. The enterprise will thereby significantly expand its capacities in the country and simultaneously strengthen its European network. Around four million euros will be invested in the new building. The new hub of GLS Czech Republic in Jihlava is expected to replace the existing nearby distribution centre in October 2012. After this initial expansion, GLS will immediately be able to process twice as many parcels as before in the new facility. It can subsequently be expanded up to a daily capacity of 120,000 parcels, with up to 68 loading gates. A modern sorting system and security technology complete the facility.

In addition to its role as a national hub, Jihlava is also used as a national head office and as an international parcel delivery interface. Daily scheduled transports connect Jihlava with the GLS European hub in Neuenstein, Germany, and with the distribution centres in Austria, Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. "Trade between Eastern and Western Europe has been growing for years," says Rico Back, CEO of the GLS Group. "We expect this trend to continue and are investing in order to provide our customers with a high-quality service in the long-term too."

GLS, General Logistics Systems B.V. (headquartered in Amsterdam), provides a network coverage of 42 European states and is globally connected via contractual agreements. 37 central transhipment points and 660 depots are at GLS’ disposal. With 13,400 employees handling 363 million parcels per year and 16,510 vehicles GLS achieved revenues of EUR 1.75 billion in the financial year 2010/11.
