Pending stay of Felbermayr group in Wels, Upper Austria

Nature conservation thwarts plans of the Felbermayr group to settle down at the Wels airfield; search for alternative locations extended to Lower Austria

The plans of the Felbermayr corporate group to permanently settle the headquarters with more than 600 employees at the Wels airfield are threatened to fail because of nature conservation. Rededication of the airfield, which is under examination on political level, would incur high penalties from the European Union, reports the Upper Austrian paper Oberösterreichische Nachrichten yesterday.

The search for alternative locations for the headquarters is difficult, given the demands of the traditional family enterprise. The group needs a 20 hectares land plot with ideal multimodal transport connections. There is evidence of a relocation to the port of Enns in Lower Austria, where also the Danube waterway could be used. However, the management desires to stay in Wels.

Felbermayr Holding GmbH headquartered in Wels, Upper Austria, is the umbrella organisation of 26 subsidiaries, concentrating on transport and lifting technology, as well as civil and structural engineering. Operating 71 branches in 17 countries the private company is present throughout Europe, and offering its products worldwide – particularly in the transport segment.

The Felbermayr corporate group has currently about 2,800 expert employees. Through activities in the segments of special transport, mobile crane and working platform hire, heavy lift handling as well as civil and structural engineering they generated a net consolidated turnover of about EUR 317 million in 2012.
