Pfizer Austria reorganises its pharmaceutical logistics
Pfizer’s pharmaceuticals warehouse moves to Austria – Kwizda Pharmadistribution takes over warehousing and distribution
Preparing to future challenges in their core business, the Austrian pharmaceutical enterprise Pfizer is reorganising its distribution strategy. To make the supply chain future- and customer-oriented, flexible and environmentally friendly, the two pharmaceutical warehouses from Germany and Austria will be merged at one location. Kwizda Pharmadistribution GmbH in Leopoldsdorf near Vienna takes over warehousing and distribution.
So far Pfizer had been operating two pharmaceutical depots and supplied its customers from Karlsruhe, Germany, and from a smaller warehouse for special products in Vienna. „In order to meet the needs of our customers, face future logistical challenges and adapt to the competition, we run only one warehouse from 29 September“, explains Mag. (FH) Markus Edelsbacher, Head of Logistics & Supply Operations Pfizer Austria.
The pharmaceutical market and thus also pharmaceutical logistics are subject to constant change and are always facing new challenges. With the revision of the EU directive Good Distribution Practice (GDP) in 2013, the rules for the transport and storage of medicines were tightened and the requirements to pharmaceutical logistics increased.
„The conditions have changed, storage and transport criteria are more stringent, existing distribution channels must be constantly tested and optimized and, not least, the cost pressure on the distribution chain grows,“ explains Mag. (FH) Markus Edelsbacher. But also the customers’ ordering behaviour had changed. Several daily orders led to an increasing pressure to adapt. In addition, service requirements of the business partners was growing, as well as their desire for flexibility.
The focus of the new distribution strategy is among other things, on the proximity to the customer, which is optimized with the reorganisation. At the same time, CO2 emissions will be reduced through shorter transport distances and the environment will be relieved – in line with Pfizer’s sustainability strategy. Not least, with this step to a new logistics partner, the best possible flexibility and service quality can be further guaranteed.
Pfizer in Austria is divided into in business for prescription drugs and over-the-counter products. The product portfolio includes innovative original medical products and patent-free products including generics.
