Port of Antwerp achieved record in container throughput in 2011

4.6 per cent increase in sea cargo throughput in the Belgian seaport of Antwerp in 2011

The year 2011 was characterised by increasing sea cargo throughput in the Port of Antwerp. According to preliminary figures total volume showed a year-on-year improvement of 4.6 per cent from 178.2 million tons to 186.4 million tons. Records have been set this year for containers and liquid bulk, with expected volumes of 104.78 million tons (up 2.2%) and 46.1 million tons (up 12.4%), respectively. Container volume was up two per cent from 2010 to 2011, to 8.6 TEU.

According to the preliminary figures for 2011 ro-ro volume in the Port of Antwerp was up by 13.3 per cent to 4.22 million tons. The number of cars handled amounts to 1,056 million, an increase of 14.7 per cent on 2010. During the reporting period 14.77 million tons of conventional/breakbulk freight was loaded and unloaded, 14.8 per cent more than the previous year. The number of seagoing ships calling at the port rose three per cent this year – there were 15,230 calls. Dry bulk was down by 6.5 per cent to 18.47 million tons, due largely to lower imports of fertilisers.
