Mierka Donauhafen Krems shows its muscles in waterside throughput

Mierka Donauhafen Krems registered significant growth in cargo throughput in 2011 and expands storage capacity

Cargo throughput developed positively in the Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems (MDK) in 2011. Total volume amounted to 1.165 tons, which is eleven per cent above last year’s level. "Thanks to the positive development of the goods groups mineral raw material, agrobulk and project cargo waterside throughput rose in spite of difficult framework conditions by 23 per cent to 428,000 tons. This makes me happy", says managing director Hubert Mierka in the interview with the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung. 530 vessels were loaded and unloaded.

30,000 TEU passed the container terminal WienCont Krems in the reporting period. This is a year-on-year-decline of 9.1 per cent. Rail throughput amounted to 263,000 tons (minus 9%). Road throughput rose 15 per cent to 474,000 tons. “Our warehouses were recording high levels of capacity utilization throughout the year“, Hubert Mierka says with satisfaction. The cargo groups gravel, wood, agricultural products and mineral raw materials accounted significantly for the increase in total throughput.

As for the year 2012 Hubert Mierka gives an outlook to investments to increase efficiency and expand warehousing capacity. In January a 2,000 m² lightweight construction hall will increase the covered area to 25,000 m². In the course of the year bulk capacity for bulk cargo shall be expanded as well. The construction of a 8,000 m³ facility is being considered.
