Port of Duisburg to build new logistics facility for Volkswagen

Volkswagen group selects Port of Duisburg as new exports hub to supply its plants outside Europe
 
The Port of Duisburg is planned to be the new exports hub of the Volkswagen group. A new logistics facility for the supply of the automobile manufacturer’s plants outside Europe will be built on 50.000 m² premises, located directly at the motorway A40. Up to 230 jobs will be created there. The respective rental agreement with Volkswagen, as well as the building lease contract with Duisburger Hafen AG were signed recently. Construction start for the about 24,000 m² hall shall take place shortly.
 
After completion by the end of January 2014 the car manufacturer’s locations in the Americas, India, China, South Africa and Malaysia will be supplied with car parts and components from Duisburg. The exports hub has a handling capacity of about 350,000 m³. Up to 1.8 million cargo packages shall then be handled via Duisburg per year. Logistics providers are currently invited to tender for the operation of the exports hub including services such as picking, packing and loading for overseas transport of the CKD components.
 
The exports hub is located on the port and logistics area Duisburg-Kasslerfeld. Connection to the motorway network is currently handled via the motorway A40’s junction Duisburg-Häfen. In the near future the area will be equipped with a new motorway exit. Moreover the premises have a side track, which shall be activated for railway transport in the future.
