Port of Hamburg enjoys great popularity in Lower Austria

Port of Hamburg: with about 50,000 TEU Lower Austria was the leading Austrian state in terms of container export in 2011

The tight economic and touristic connection between Germany and Lower Austria motivates politicians of both countries to exchange their experiences on a regular basis. Lower Austria’s Minister of Economy and Tourism Petra Bohuslav and her delegation lately stayed in Hamburg, with the aim of intensifying relations between these two regions.

The Port of Hamburg has been an important partner for Lower Austria’s enterprises for a long time. With about 50,000 TEU in 2001, Lower Austria was the leading of Austria’s nine federal states in terms of container export. The group of the most important exporters includes e.g. the companies Stora Enso Wood Products GmbH, Fritz Egger Gruppe, Doka GmbH, Agrana AG and Pollmann Austria.

The economic part of the delegates’ journey was in the sign of a visitation of Hamburg’s Senator Frank Horch, in charge of Economy, Transport and Innovation, as well as a discussion with Axel Mattern, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V.. Ms. Bohuslav negotiated about the future challenges for economy and cargo traffic, as they are recorded in the European Union’s White Paper on logistics. They expect European cargo traffic to rise 80 per cent until the year 2050 (based on the 2005 figure).
