Clear uptrend in the first half of 2010 at Port of Hamburg for seagoing cargo

Port of Hamburg is in a clear uptrend. Given a continuous positive economic climate, Claudia Roller, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V., expects a total volume of 119 million tons and 7.7 million TEU in container transport tis year. Thus Germany’s biggest seaport would beat the previous year’s figures by 8 and 9 per cent respectively.

In the period from January to June 2010 Port of Hamburg handled 58.6 million tons of goods, which is 8.1 per cent more than in the same period of the previous year. Regarding import the volumnes rose 12.3 per cent to 33.5 million tons. Exportations showed an improvement of 2.9 per cent to 24.9 million tons. General cargo throughput posted 5 per cent more – 38.8 million tons. Thereof 1.2 million tons (up 2.7 per cent) were generated with conventional sea freight. The bulk cargo segment handled 19.7 million tons (up 14.8 per cent).

Container transport grew 4.3 per cent to 3.7 million TEU in the reporting period. On the links with Asia 2.2 million TEU (up 6.9 per cent) were handled. Container transport with North and South America showed an 11.6 per cent growth to 380,000 TEU. In Africa traffic Port of Hamburg showed a 14.7 per cent rise in the first half of 2010, to 96,000 TEU in total.
