Port of Hamburg lost 30 million tons of sea cargo

Port of Hamburg starts journey towards moderate growth in 2010
 

After a difficult year 2009 the Hamburg port community expects better times. “The bottom of goods throughput is overcome. We expect moderate growth in 2010“, says Claudia Roller, CEO Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. (HMM), at a press conference.

In 2009 the Hamburg Port reported a decline in sea cargo throughput of 21.4 per cent or 30 million tons to around 110 million tons. General cargo volume fell 24.8 per cent to 73.6 million tons. Bulk cargo throughput deteriorated by 13.4 per cent to 36.8 million tons.

The container traffic volume amounted to 71.2 million tons in the reporting period (down 25.1 per cent), or 7.01 million TEU (down 28 per cent). In total 4.2 million TEU (down 24.3 per cent) were handled from and to Asia. Container traffic with Baltic Sea states dropped 43.8 per cent to 1.4 million TEU. In general Hamburg was able to maintain is position as the largest universal port in Germany throughout the year 2009.
