Rail Cargo Group: Intermodal heavy transport from Siberia to Austria

New intermodal transport solution by Rail Cargo Group for timber industry links Siberia to the port of Krems

Responding to customer demands the Rail Cargo Group is starting to operate a long haul route from Siberia and Moscow directly to Austria and return these days. Through the new cross border cargo transport service the company is ideally linking Russia to Central and Western Europe.

The objective of the recently launched transport concept is shifting heavy transport from road to rail on the route from Siberia to Austria v.v.. In a first approach Rail Cargo Operator – CSKD and Transcontainer developed an innovative transport system which allows carrying 2,300 tonnes of timber on the railway. Before the end of this year five to six block trains shall be operated. From 2014 the partners intend to offer a long-term service for customers from the timber industry.

As to the intermodal heavy transport cargo is loaded in Dobra, Slovakia, from Russian broad gauge to European gauge on 4 axled or 6 axled containers and then forwarded via the UNS terminal of Rail Cargo Operator – CSKD in Slovakia. Rail Cargo Operator ensures secure and efficient combination of wagons, customised to heavy transport. At the border of Slovakia and Austria the intermodal train is transferred to Rail Cargo Austria for the last mile to the Danube port of Krems.
