RCA: Parts of Rail Cargo Hungaria for disposal

Management of Rail Cargo Austria is reflecting on further cooperation options for Rail Cargo Hungaria

“We are searching for partners in Hungary. As to Rail Cargo Hungaria we have reached a stage, where we are reflecting on further options for cooperations“ – this is the core message of Erik Regter, CEO of Rail Cargo Austria AG, when talking to the in an interview with the paper Industriemagazin. According to the manager a partner from Hungary’s railway industry is showing interest. Also Hungary’s national railway company is in the race. Regter: „We have had negotiations, and we are still negotiating – but they are not about 100 per cent."

According to Industriemagazin the Hungarian state-owned railway group MÁV has been trying for months to get back cargo capacities from the ÖBB subsidiary (former MAV Cargo), which had been redeveloped in the past years. Most recently rumours have been spread about nationalisation of the enterprise. However, it is unclear how this should be processed. The Hungarian RCA subsidiary might form a “strategic cooperation“ with the Hungarian state railway MÁV under the pressure of Hungary’s government. Furthermore a potential amendment could upgrade the rail cargo transport to a „national monopoly" – and hence open the gates to re-nationalisation.
