Record handling at the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg

CSCL Le Havre container vessel achieves a record in the port of Hamburg: over 11,500 TEU were handled at a single ship’s call

Last week, the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg chalked up an absolute record. At a single ship’s call, over 11,500 TEU were loaded and unloaded. This record volume was attributable to the container vessel CSCL Le Havre, which docked at the Eurogate terminal on 13 May 2014. Clocking up 140 movements per hour, the container gantries transported 11,624 TEU onto and off the quay in continuous operation. After 52 hours, handling was completed and the ship, which had arrived from Rotterdam, was able to continue its journey to Zeebrugge.

“The example of the CSCL Le Havre shows that ever higher volumes of containers are being handled at a single ship’s call. This presents us as terminal operators with certain challenges,” points out  Emanuel Schiffer, President of the Eurogate Group Management. “However, this trend also shows how important it is to have good hinterland connections. They must not become a chokepoint when it comes to transporting the containers to and from the port,” he adds.
