Rewe Int. AG inaugurates new central warehouse in Ohlsdorf

Food chain Rewe International AG constructed ‘Zentrallager West’ warehouse for ambient foodstuff in Ohlsdorf, Upper Austria, with EUR 60 million

In the presence of Upper Austria’s governor Josef Pühringer and around 150 guests from the region, the Rewe International AG opened the new central warehouse ‘Zentrallager West’ in Ohlsdorf on 8 October. On around 146,000 m² the company by their own account sets a new benchmark for sustainability. With the central warehouse by 2014 around 250 new jobs will be created in Upper Austria, including 220 warehouse workers and 30 drivers. Currently, about 200 people are already employed in the warehouse.

The Rewe International AG has invested around EUR 60 million euros in the new central warehouse. „During the construction of the plant, it was not only important for us to optimise transport routes, but also to make the warehouse itself as sustainable as possible. Logistics and warehousing are core competencies of a foodstuff retailer. Thus, it is obvious that energy efficiency measures in this area must be a standard,“ said Reinhard Schürk, CEO of REWE International AG.

Shortening transport routes should save about six million kilometers covered by truck each year. In addition, the energy consumption in the warehouse is kept as low as possible, e.g. through using LED lighting and skin insulation.

On about 36,000 m² of warehouse space more than 9,500 (ambient) items can be stored. From Ohlsdorf in Upper Austria about 1,000 branches and independent merchants in Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Upper Austria and parts of Carinthia will be regularly supplied. Five days a week, around 130,000 ordering units per day are delivered, settled and redistributed.

The range of dry goods of Rewe International AG is delivered from the central warehouses in Wiener Neudorf (Lower Austria) and now also from the second central warehouse in Ohlsdorf (Upper Austria). In addition, there are regional fresh goods warehouses in Inzersdorf, St. Pölten, Kalsdorf, St. Veit an der Glan, Lauterach, Stams, Hallein and Ansfelden, from where branches of Billa, Merkur, Penny and Adeg are supplied with fresh products.
