RFG welcomes Scotland’s reprieve for Freight Facilities Grants

The Rail Freight Group (RFG) has welcomed the Scottish government’s decision to reprieve the threatened Freight Facilities Grant scheme, which has eliminated 33 million lorry miles from Scotland’s roads since 1997.

RFG, which represents users and suppliers of rail freight services throughout the UK, said that the decision to retain the scheme in the new Scottish Budget will be "good for the environment and good for Scotland’s economy."

RFG Scottish Representative, David Spaven, commented: "Keeping Freight Facilities Grants will allow new rail schemes to take tens of thousands of heavy lorries off Scottish roads every year."

He added that the Grants reprieve will mean not only relief for communities throughout Scotland – including the Highlands, Perthshire, Fife, Lanarkshire and South Ayrshire – but also support for economic development through providing a safe, sustainable and resilient alternative to road haulage.
