Rhenus boosts joint Danube operations with Hubert Mierka

Capital increase at Mierka Beteiligungs GmbH makes Rhenus the new majority shareholder and brings in means for expanded Danube operations
 
The Rhenus group step up their commitment at the Danube port Mierka Donauhafen Krems. Singin the relevant agreement on 25 April 2013, they increase their shares in the Mierka Beteiligungs GmbH (MBG) through capital increase from 26 per cent to 51 per cent. The transaction is subject to the approval by the competition authority. The objective of this measure is to expand joint Danube operations of Rhenus and Hubert Mierka, managing associate of Mierka Donauhafen Krems, and to finance the associated investments.
 
“Since we started cooperating with Mierka Donauhafen Krems in summer 2010 the strategic partnership has gathered pace. By increasing the share capital, we’re creating the conditions to continue expansion of our range of tri-modal products in the Danube region,” says Michael Viefers, a member of the Rhenus Board.
 
“The increase in share capital once again confirms the clear commitment by Rhenus to the Krems business site and to other investments in the Danube region. The new funds will enable us to invest in our Danube mission. This also includes our commitment to inland waterway shipping operations associated with the founding of Rhenus Mierka Danube Shipping founded in 2012,” comments Hubert Mierka. The entrepreneur, who was the sole shareholder of MBG until Rhenus came aboard in 2010, will maintain his investments and is also personally committed to the future of the company.
 
Mierka Donauhafen Krems has modern and multi-functional transhipment equipment, and offers its customers large-scale storage space in covered or open areas. Stuffing and stripping containers is linked with warehouse logistics services at the multi-modal freight station. By cooperating with the HHLA railway subsidiary, Metrans, the central European business area in the state of Lower Austria with its port site in Krems is directly linked to the major maritime ports by container train services. The MDK team consists of 70 employees, generating turnover of more than EUR 25 million in 2012 and positive results despite the difficult market environment. MDK has an equity ratio of more than 45 per cent.
