Rhenus Donauhafen Krems gets a new lightweight hall

The low water level on the Danube in the summer and autumn of 2018 has left its mark on the balance sheet of Rhenus Donauhafen Krems. As Gerhard Gussmagg, Managing Director of the operating company Rhenus Donauhafen Krems GmbH & Co. KG, announces, 1.21 million tonnes of goods were handled at Loweraustria´s largest transshipment point on the waterway in the previous year. That was a minus of 16 percent compared to 2017.

Broken down by modes of transport, transshipment dropped 35 percent to 347,000 tons. “The decline is due to the historical low water as well as lower transport volumes of ballast and wind power components,” explains Gerhard Gussmagg to the Lower Austrian Economic Press Service. The volume of lorries remained virtually unchanged at 559,000 metric tons, while rail transhipment increased by five percent to 368,000 metric tons. This expansion program at the site will be continued this year. “We are building a 1,700 m² lightweight hall with a 10-ton capacity crane for loading and unloading containers, which will be completed by the end of March,” announces Gerhard Gussmagg. The customs clearance services are also being expanded, as Kremser Hafen wants to benefit from the international waterway. “At the moment, the Danube has the best sailing conditions,” notes the managing director.
