Rhenus takes over WECKERLE GmbH Spedition + Logistik

Effective immediately, Rhenus AG & Co is taking over WECKERLE GmbH Spedition + Logistik – subject to approval by the anti-trust authority.

Founded 65 years ago, the Weckerle freight forwarding company in Fellbach near Stuttgart provides domestic and international overland services, as well as warehousing for goods and value added services.

Rhenus already has business operations in Stuttgart in its Contract Logistics business area; Rhenus Revival, the specialist for the CIS countries, has an office there and the group has a branch for sea- and airfreight services at the airport.

Rhenus will continue the existing local partnerships for domestic and foreign scheduled cargo traffic that is shipped overland, similar to the cooperation arrangements used at other bases.

In other news, Rhenus and Mierka Donauhafen Krems have agreed to form a strategic partnership.

Subject to approval by antitrust authorities, Rhenus will take a 26% stake in Mierka Beteiligungs (MBG) as part of a capital increase.  To date, Hubert Mierka has been the company’s sole shareholder.

MBG owns 100% of the shares in Mierka Donauhafen Krems (MDK), a trimodal logistics service provider in the Danube river port of Krems.  Expansion of Danube activities is one of the most important goals of this partnership.

Mierka Donauhafen Krems is near the midway point of the 3,500 km Rhine-Main-Danube waterway in Krems, Austria. At its 250,000 m2 site, Mierka offers multifunctional transhipment solutions and storage in logistics facilities (23,000 m2), bulk facilities (18,000 m3) and open storage spaces (60,000 m2).

Several other companies are part of MDK:

  • The multimodal freight station bundles together the container freight station, a container terminal and four rail facilities. MDK holds a 74% stake in the terminal, which is operated by subsidiary Wiencont Krems. The remaining shares are held by Wiencont Wien.

  • An agrarian terminal offers 25,000 m3 of silo storage space, where Danugrain handles grain logistics. Raiffeisen Ware Austria (RWA) owns 60% of Danugrain, and MDK owns 40%.

  • A trimodal fertiliser terminal with packaging service is operated by Danufert, which is owned by RWA (60%) and MDK (40%).

  • Mierka Befrachtung, which is owned outright by Mierka Donauhafen Krems, is responsible for the organisation of the river transport. Mierka Befrachtung has a 45% stake in Panta Rhei Slovakia, which purchases and operates inland navigation vessels.

According to Michael Viefers, member of the Rhenus management board, the strategic partnership between Rhenus and MDK is focused on offering excellent trimodal logistics with great advantages for customers, and the continuing development and expansion of MDK’s site in Krems.
