SBB Cargo achieves first positive result in more than 40 years

Consequent orientation towards the strengths of railway leads the cargo transport of the Swiss national railway (SBB) back to the profit zone

For the first time in over 40 years SBB Cargo AG (Basel) generated a positive result in 2013. This is a major step in the restructuring of the company. The result of CHF 14.7 million was CHF 65.9 million up on the previous year. At the same time the freight revenues increased by 4.7 per cent in total. In a tough competitive market SBB Cargo increased its traffic performance by 1.5 per cent to 12.3 billion net tonne kilometers. In the business field of Switzerland, transport performance grew slightly (5.2 billion net tonne kilometers, previous year: 5.0 billion).

SBB Cargo International was able to maintain its market position, produce more efficient and stabilise financially: despite strong competition earnings were CHF 8.2 million higher than last year, but with CHF 2.8 million it was still in the red. In the second half of the year, SBB Cargo International achieve a balanced result for the period. „The market environment in the freight traffic industry remains both nationally and internationally demanding and competitive pressures from the road remains high,“ reads a press release.

In 2013 SBB Cargo has realigned its production networks, fleet and management, thus significantly improving the cost structure. Also, the company was able to attract new customers despite the reduction of the operating points. In intermodal transport, two new lines were opened and the preliminary work was started for another relation.
