Screwfix to double size of Stoke logistics site

Screwfix has applied for planning permission for 300,000 sq ft distribution centre next to its existing 325,000 sq ft site at Trentham Lakes in Stoke on Trent.

The company, which supplies trade tools, plumbing, electrical, bathrooms and kitchens, said the development “is necessary to consolidate and expand upon the existing Screwfix operations at their Trentham and Marchington sites respectively”.

Most of the capacity would be for additional storage and distribution purposes. The new building would also include an ancillary office and an enclosed loading/unloading bay.

The decision to expand the existing Trentham site was taken after a UK wide search, as well as considering the extension of a number of other group warehouses across Europe, it said.

“It will allow for the merger of the two sites, thereby safeguarding 431 jobs and directly generating an additional 107 full time jobs at the one site with the potential for 200 additional jobs going forward. As such, the development will contribute significantly to local job creation.”

Screwfix, which is part of Kingfisher plc, started life as the Woodscrew Supply Company in 1979. The company´s first catalogue consisted of a single page solely dedicated to screws.

The fully automated, 325,000 sq ft distribution centre was opened at Trentham in 2004, fulfilling next day orders. It also has a 540,000 sq ft distribution centre at Stafford.
