SeaIntel releases container carrier environmental benchmark

SeaIntel Maritime Analysis has developed an environmental benchmark allowing the first direct comparison across the twenty largest global container carriers.

As the global focus on environmental performance has grown, so has the focus by some of the global container carriers. To date, however, there has not been a systematic comparison of overall performance across the world’s largest container carriers.

One of the key challenges to such a comparison is a significant lack of quantifiable information available across all carriers.

SeaIntel has developed an environmental benchmark, which is a combination of the performance of the individual carrier fleets and their tangible actions to drive their own performance forward, as well as that of the entire industry.

The methodology therefore rewards both technical performance and tangible actions to drive industry standards.

Looking forward, the establishment of standards is the key to setting targets as well as a key to better utilising environmental performance as a competitive parameter.

All carriers are rated on a scale of 1 to 5, with final scores ranging from 2.14 to 3.87. According to this methodology, the Top 3 performing carriers are:

  • Maersk Line (3.87)
  • Hamburg Süd (3.81)
  • Hyundai Merchant Marine (3.51)

The Top 20 carriers operate 84% of all capacity deployed in liner trades.
