Strong growth at the Gdansk deep water container terminal

DCT Gdansk (Poland) is taking preparations to increase their throughput capacity to around 1 million TEU per year

Business is running in full swing at the Gdansk deep water container terminal (DCT Gdansk). CEO Boris Wenzel expects the total throughput to triple this year from just above 150,000 TEU in 2009 to 450,000 TEU. In the period from January to June 173,279 TEU were handled at the quay walls of the biggest Polish container terminal. About 36,000 TEU thereof were handled in June; the trend is rising.

To be able to generate further growth, Wenzel is taking preparations to acquire additional equipment for the manipulation of containerised consignments. The Manager wants to increase the current handling capacity of DCT Gdansk from around 600,000 TEU to 1 million TEU per year. On the long term and with additional buildings, port facilities for the handling of up to 4 million TEU might be constructed.

DCT Gdansk is the only container terminal in Poland and the Baltic States that has a direct link from Asia to Europe. Maersk Line’s AE10 service calls once every week at the terminal that is accessible to vessels with a maximum draught of 16.5 metres. Feeder services offer connections from and to Rotterdam, Bremerhaven/Hamburg, Kaliningrad/Baltijsk, Helsinki, Kotka and St. Petersburg. The basic equipment of the facility includes a rail terminal with two tracks, each having a length of 1,000 metres.
