Strong increase in transshipment at Mierka Donauhafen Krems

Mierka Donauhafen Krems is back on track: Between the beginning of January and the end of June 2017, the largest transshipment point at the waterway in Lower Austria loaded a total volume of around 640,000 tonnes. “This is a slight increase of one percentage point compared to the reference period of the previous year,” Hubert Mierka, Managing Director of Mierka Donauhafen Krems GmbH & Co KG informed the Lower Austrian Press Service on request.

Although the entire Danube navigation between Bavaria and Romania was impeded and phase-wise even came to a standstill due to extreme cold and icing of the torrent in January and February, the port of Krems ironically achieved the strongest growth in the transshipment sector. “In total, we have loaded and unloaded nearly 170,000 tonnes in this segment. This was an increase of 20 per cent,” says Hubert Mierka.

Mierka Donauhafen Krems also recorded a plus in truck handling, which rose by 10 per cent to 300,000 tonnes in the first half of 2017. On the other hand, there was a minus of 20 per cent to 171,000 tonnes in rail transshipment. In order to keep the port of Krems fit for the growing container business in the future, the company expanded its area at the quay wall by a further 7,000 m².

As an important driving force for the economic development of the transshipment site at the gate to the Wachau, Hubert Mierka states the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. “This waterway connects Krems directly to the large sea ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. The first cargo ship that crossed the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal in 1992 aimed for the port of  Krems,” he announces with pride.
