Strong increase of cargo throughput at port of Kiel

Port of Kiel profits from booming ferry traffic from/to Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic States in the first half of the year 2011:

At the port of Kiel the development of cargo traffic was in the sign of growth throughout the first half of the year 2011. Throughput performance rose 20 per cent to more than 3.2 million tons between January and June. Ferry traffic from/to Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic States was crucial for this growth. Dr. Dirk Claus, Managing Director Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG: „We can look back on an outstanding first half of the year. If this positive development continues throughout this year, we will handle more than 6 million tons of cargo for the first time.“

In addition to throughput of seagoing cargo, demand for port services – such as storage or reloading – has risen strongly. Combined railway/vessel load transport has also increased considerably. In the first six months almost 10,000 cargo units were handled at Ostuferhafen port and at Schwedenkai quay.
