Throughput at the Port of Rotterdam increases 3%

The Port of Rotterdam has reported a 3% increase in throughput for the first quarter of 2012 at 110m tonnes compared with 107m tonnes for the same period of 2011 (Ti Dashboard – Port of Rotterdam).

The rise was primarily driven by an increase in the volume of liquid bulk throughput, which was up 9% to 55m tonnes. Both crude oil and mineral oil volumes grew by 1.5m tonnes.

However, this increase was offset by a decline in the volume of dry bulk, which fell 7% to 19m tonnes. Whilst throughput of coal increased 14.7%; agribulk, iron ore and other dry bulk were all down by 15.2%, 13.9% and 18.7%, respectively.

Container throughput, which accounted for 30m tonnes of total throughput, increased 1% for the period. However, in terms of twenty- foot equivalent units (TEUs), volumes fell by 4% to 2.8m TEUs. While, loaded containers fell by 1.1%, empty containers (which are not being returned to the East) declined by 16.2%.
