Two “old ladies” return to Steiermarkbahn

Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH (StB TL) has taken over two locomotives of the 1142 series on 9th November. Following the revision or transformer conversion by ÖBB Technische Services Linz in autumn 2018, the two machines, which were acquired by the ESG rail transport company from Vaihingen/Enz, were put into operation.

In particular the look of the two locomotives stands out: The 1142-562 is designed in the new branding of the StB TL, in white, with the Styrian logo – a green panther, and a steel-blue roof. Based on the StB TL branding, the 1142-578 moreover has design elements of a long-standing business partner. All this should make the vehicles unique on the Austrian and German networks.

“We are pleased about the good cooperation with the technical services of ÖBB. The two locomotives will definitely help us to increase our own services in block train and regional freight traffic and to further gain our position in the rail transport sector,” says Gerhard Harer, Managing Director of Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH.

Thanks to the ÖBB-WTB (Wire Train Bus) the two locomotives can be operated in multiple traction with all track locomotives of the StB TL, which are also equipped with ÖBB-WTB. Thus, the vehicles 2016, 1216 and 1142 can be combined, which significantly increased the flexibility of future transport services.

For the ÖBB the 1142 is still essential today. They are often used in multiple traction with similar 1142 and as a lead with Taurus and 1144 machines on the Semmering route. At present, the ÖBB uses about 60 1142-locomotives in many ways. They are experiencing a kind of “renaissance”, above all because of the increased use of the Taurus abroad.
