Tyrolean AL-KO plant and Dachser Austria stimulate each other

Dachser Austria manages warehouse logistics for AL-KO in Austria; Picking and fixed shuttle transportation complete the service range since 2014

Dachser Austria the logistics provider is transporting approximately two million meters of steel wire per month for the Zillertal branch of the AL-KO company. The partnership has been existing since 2005. It all started when AL-KO no longer had sufficient logistics or warehouse space for the growing production at its plants in Zell im Zillertal and Ramsau. The partnership has been evolving continuously. Last year, Dachser set up a shuttle and took over picking activities for AL-KO.

„Running a logistics warehouse is not our core competency. In order to create new production facilities and substantially increase the amount of value creation, we had started a warehouse outsourcing project and sent a request for tenders for these logistics services to well-known logistics service providers”, said Werner Zimmermann, Head of Purchasing and Logistics of AL-KO in retrospective. The choice fell on Dachser Austria – partly because the logistics service provider is a global company, and also because the logistics centre in Hall is not far away from the AL-KO branch in Tyrol.

The collaboration worked well from the beginning and has been continuously evolving. „We practise very close communication with each other and maintain a continuous exchange of experience. If any problems occur, they are addressed and solved together”, said Werner Zimmermann.

Dachser Austria provides a consignment warehouse in Hall for many suppliers of AL-KO. A large proportion of raw materials and supplies such as steel wire wound on drums is delivered and stored directly at this branch. All storage of AL-KO-finished products are recorded by scanning the AL-KO barcodes on the packages and registered using Dachser’s own Mikado warehouse management software. For the picking and putaway processes Dachser is connected with AL-KO via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange).

„Thanks to the close cooperation with Dachser, AL-KO is able to concentrate on its core competence,“ says AL-KO Logistics Manager Werner Zimmermann – „This is a win-win situation for both partners.“ Meanwhile, the initial demand of 200 storage spaces for AL KO has increased to up to 2,000 storage spaces in Hall.

The Zillertal AL-KO office is part of the AL-KO Kober Group, headquartered in Germany, a global company with over 4,000 employees operating in the areas of automotive technology, garden & hobby as well as ventilation technology. The Tyrolean branch specialises in fully and partially automated automotive cable winch production and also in the technology center Ramsau im Zillertal produces wheel brakes, clutches, trailer control systems, winches, supports and much more.

The family business with headquarters in Kötz bei Günzburg was founded by Alois Kober in1931 and is an international manufacturer in the field of automotive technology, garden equipment and aircraft. The holding company with more than 50 locations employs around 4,200 people. In 2012 sales amounted to EUR 706 million.
