Unbroken growth with Jettainer, specialist for ULD management

Jettainer celebrates its 10th anniversary – the company’s business model is more relevant than ever among airlines

Jettainer, the world’s leading provider for outsourced unit load devices (ULD) management, is celebrating its 10th birthday. Founded April 27, 2004 as an outsourced department of Lufthansa Cargo, the company today manages renowned airlines around the world.

Over the years, the ULD fleet increased from its original size of 27,000 to over 85,000 units. Also the containers and pallets themselves have changed considerably: once consisting out of aluminium, approximately 40 per cent of all small containers are now made of lightweight composite material. The use of innovative lightweights ensures for significantly less fuel consumption and emissions for airlines.

In 2004 the company had started with a staff of nine employees at its headquarters in Raunheim, near Frankfurt airport. Today, 60 employees are active in the Raunheim, Dusseldorf, Zurich, Rome, Milan, Philadelphia and Abu Dhabi offices. In addition, there is an operational location in Mumbai.

“We are experiencing a strong and healthy growth which we want to continue in the coming years,” says Carsten Hernig, who has been managing director of Jettainer since this year. „The business model of Jettainer is more relevant than ever. More and more airlines are discovering the ULD management as an opportunity to increase efficiency, optimis costs and to improve their environmental performance.“

In the development process of its offers and services, Jettainer puts its trust in the ever-growing digitalisation. In this regard, the JettAPP was launched in 2013, marking the first application for ULD management on the ground. In addition, the company is collaborating with the University of Cologne by developing a learning system for decision support. This will assist ULD-managers with standard processes, making their work more quick and efficient. Further, ULD-experts are working on different projects to precisely localise units through the usage of RFID and GPS.
