Upturn of cargo throughput in Austria’s Danube ports

Cargo throughput at ports and piers on the Austrian segment of the Danube has considerably improved in 2010

 

On the water side throughput at the port facilities and piers in the Austrian segment of the Danube ports has recently been rising significantly. In 2010 the total volume compared to 2009 increased according to Statistics Austria calculations by 22.2 per cent or 1.6 million tons to 8.8 million tons. Gravel that was dredged from the Danube basin accounted for 0.03 million tons of this figure.

The ports in Linz handled 5.2 million tons of goods on the water side in the reporting period. This means a 25.1 per cent-increase on the year 2009. Vienna’s ports showed a 11.6 per cent-increase of water side throughput to 1.1 million tons; The port of Enns reported 0.7 million tons, which is a year-on-year increase of 25.4 per cent. Water side throughput at the port of Krems rose 35.2 per cent to 0.4 million tons in 2010. The other ports and piers handled a total amount of 1.4 million tons at the water side. This means a 14.6 per cent-improvement on the year 2009.
