Vienna Airport to launch three new long-haul routes

Three new, permanent long-haul routes from Vienna Beijing with Air China, to Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, and to Newark with Austrian Airlines

On March 28, 2014, the summer flight schedule will go into effect at Vienna International Airport, implementing numerous changes. Three new long-haul destinations will be available from Vienna. Air China will begin flying to Beijing on May 5, Ethiopian Airlines will be providing service to the African metropolis of Addis Ababa effective June 2, and Austrian Airlines will be expanding its North American connections by adding a new long-haul route to Newark on July 2.

“Together with Austrian Airlines’ management board, we are working hard to bring more long-haul routes and new Star Alliance partners to Vienna. The opening of new routes by Air China and Ethiopian Airlines, plus AUA’s new long-haul connection to Newark, demonstrate that this strategy is successful. Beyond that, we also see new connections, carriers, and expanded timetables stimulating the growth of Vienna. That will provide a new boost to the economic and tourist regions of Austria and international markets. Our role as the hub to Eastern Europe is of crucial importance,” explains Julian Jäger, member of Flughafen Wien AG’s Management Board.

Starting May 5, 2014, Air China will provide service four times a week along a route from Beijing to Vienna to Barcelona using an Airbus A330-300. Every Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday, the aircraft will depart from Beijing at 2:10 a.m., landing at 6:10 a.m. in Vienna. The flight continues to Barcelona at 7:30 a.m., arriving there at 9:25 a.m. Flying in the opposite direction, the aircraft takes off at 11:25 a.m. from Barcelona and lands at 1:25 p.m. in Vienna. The flight from Vienna to Beijing departs at 2:55 p.m. and touches down at 5:55 a.m. the next day.

Starting June 2, 2014, Ethiopian Airlines will provide service four times a week from Vienna to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa. The aircraft (Boeing 757 and Boeing 767-300) will take off every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 12:20 a.m. from Addis Ababa and land at 6:10 a.m. in Vienna (flight number ET724). Coming from the opposite direction, the plane departs every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 11:10 p.m. from Vienna, arriving at 7:05 a.m. the next morning in Addis Ababa (flight number ET725).

Austrian Airlines is expanding its routes to North America by adding Newark, New Jersey, to its list of long-haul destinations beginning July 2, 2014. Five times a week, a Boeing 777 will take to the skies headed for that U.S. city. In addition, AUA will be increasing its connections to Chicago by one flight per day, and it will be using a larger aircraft when flying to Washington. As of March 30, flights to Delhi will leave daily, and Male, the capital city of the Maldives, will be served once a week in summer starting in July.
