Vienna Airport: Weak start of air freight to the year

Air cargo handling at the Vienna International Airport in January 2013 substantially lower than last January

As to the “cargo business” point of view, it was a weak January 2013 for the Vienna Airport. Cargo volume (air cargo and trucking) declined by 6.4 per cent to 17,953 tonnes compared to the same period in the previous year. Declines were recorded in the number of flight movements with minus 5.2 per cent, to 17,137 take-offs and landings, Flughafen Wien AG informs in a press release.

The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport fell by 1.7 per cent year-on-year to 1,374,156 persons in January 2013. This decline resulted, above all, from unusually heavy snowstorms in eastern Austria on 17 January 2013 and the resulting massive impact on the entire area as well as the related limitations on air travel throughout Europe because of the severe winter weather.
