Wincanton achieves Carbon Trust standard

Wincanton has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard after reducing its carbon emissions by 4.5% over the last three years.

Wincanton is one of 400 UK companies to achieve this independent verification.

Wincanton operates 5,000 vehicles from 285 UK locations and spends more than £100 million per year on energy. The company has implemented a range of initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of its contracts, including:

  • Network optimisation and backhauling to increase load factors
  • Fuel-efficient driver training with monthly awards for the best drivers
  • Using double-deck and teardrop trailers
  • Introducing movement sensors and re-lamping in buildings to cut electricity usage

Steve Tainton, Wincanton’s Group Energy Sustainability manager, pointed out that the company’s high-profile clients in the retail sector are particularly keen to reduce their carbon footprint.

"The Standard demonstrates to an increasingly green audience that we are committed to a low carbon future and to minimising our environmental impact," said Tainton.
