Work starts on 32,000 sq m Royal Mail hub
Royal Mail has started designing the technical fit out for Royal Mail’s 32,000 sq m fully-automated parcels hub in Warrington.
The hub is part of Royal Mail’s plans to extend its UK delivery network as it plans to introduce a second delivery for next day parcels and larger items. The extension is expected to be fully operational by 2023.
The hub will process over 600,000 parcels per day and employ 370 employees. Parcels will comprise items purchased from retailers the evening before, as well as larger parcels more suitable for van delivery.
Royal Mail plans also plans to relocate its North West Distribution Centre in Mill Lane and some associated operations to the new site subject to ongoing consultations.
“This significant commitment to the North West is just one example of how Royal Mail is changing to drive e-commerce growth across the UK. This new site – the first of three parcel hubs to be announced – alongside initiatives like accepting e-retail parcels into our network late in the evening, will help us to meet growing demand for next day delivery,” said Royal Mail national operations director Simon Barker.
“We are talking to our people who work in and around Warrington and our unions about our proposals for the new site. We want to fully involve them in shaping our operations in the North West and helping us to safeguard high quality employment opportunities in our business.”
