WWL moves iconic Mazdas to Belgium

WWL transported historic and new cars to Antwerp

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics’ (WWL) 2004-built 61,321 grt RoRo ship MV Torrens made a special call in Antwerp to bring in a shipment of 14 historic Mazda Cosmo sports cars and 4,500 of Mazda’s latest models from Japan.

The Mazda Cosmo is an icon for the firm, and these 14 rare and collectable cars are destined for a world Cosmo meeting being held from 10 to 15 August in Augsburg, Germany.

When it was introduced in 1967, the Mazda Cosmo was the first sports car fitted with a Wankel engine in what has since become a rich Mazda tradition. The Cosmo was an early forerunner of today’s modern RX-8 sports car.

Belgium is a logistics hub for Mazda’s European operations. The company imports around 90,000 new cars every year through ACPC in Antwerp for distribution in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, making Antwerp the most important harbour in Europe for Mazda.  Cars destined for Great Britain and Ireland are transhipped via Zeebrugge from Japan.
