Zeebrugge recorded increase in container traffic in 2008

Stable cargo throughput at Port of Zeebrugge in 2008

At the Belgian seaport of Zeebrugge the year 2008 was characterised by declines in ro-ro traffic and automotive turnover and a substantial increase in container volumes. The port felt the impact of the declining economic performance in Great Britain. The total throughput remained stable compared to 2007 with 42 million tons, as the Port Authority Zeebrugge published.

Container throughput grew in the reporting period by 9.4 per cent to 2.21 million TEU, or by 4.3 per cent to 21.2 million tons. The ro-ro facilities handled 11.8 million tons of goods. The number of dispatched new cars amounted to 2.126 million, which is 3.7 per cent less than in 2007. Liquid Bulk throughput improved 6 per cent to 6.2 million tons. Conventional cargo amounted to 855,000 tons.
