Danube ports saw a slight decrease in waterborne cargo throughput

The goods group of „ores and metal scrap“ accounted for the largest volume transported on the Austrian Danube waterway in the year 2014

The entire throughput volume of waterborne cargo handled in the ports and berths on the Austrian Danube section decreased by 2.7 per cent or by 0.2 million tonnes to 8.6 million tonnes in the reporting year 2014.

Declines in throughput of waterborne cargo were seen the ports of Linz reporting 4.3 million tonnes (-8.8%), the ports of Vienna reporting 1.4 million tonnes (-17.6%) and the port of Enns reporting a figure of 0.7 million tonnes (-0.8%). On the contrary, the port of Krems registered an increase of 30.1 per cent to 0.6 million tonnes. All the other ports and berths (including dredgings and discharges in the Danube basin) handled a total of 1.6 million, meaning a 26.7%-increase on 2013.

The goods of the NST/R group „ores and metal scrap“ accounted for the largest volume transported in 2014, namely 25.8 per cent (2.6 million tonnes). Also the goods of the groups „agricultural and forestry products, live animals“ with a share of 18.1 per cent (1.8 million tonnes), „petroleum oil and mineral oil products“ (share: 17.9% or 1.8 million tonnes) as well as „fertilisers“ (share: 10.4% or 1.1 million tonnes) were transported in larger volumes on the waterway. Other goods groups showed substantially smaller transport volumes and figures.
