1,472 new freight railcars and 71 locomotives for DB Schenker Rail

DB Schenker Rail invests around EUR 410 million into rolling stock in 2010

DB Schenker Rail, the cargo railway division of Deutsche Bahn, implements a huge investment program in 2010. About EUR 410 million will be invested mainly into new freight rail cars and locomotives. “This is a record sum, which we are going to use where our customers‘ demand for transport services rises and where modern equipment is required“, elaborates Dr. Karl-Friedrich Rausch, CEO Transport and Logistics of DB Mobility Logistics AG. The fleet is currently modernized particularly regarding to rail cars for the mining, chemicals and automotive industries.

About EUR 190 million are reserved for acquisition of new rail cars and maintenance of rail cars, another EUR 167 million are invested into locomotives. The remaining amount is divided to investments for facilities and IT equipment. Before the end of this year DB Schenker Rail will buy 1,472 new rail cars and 71 locomotives, including around 700 special rail wagons for mining traffic.

DB Schenker Rail registered a year-on-year increase in the volume of transported goods of 58 million tons to 203 million tons in the first half of 2010. This is 40.1 per cent-more. Transport performance rose 8.3 billion to 52.6 billion ton kilometers in the same period, which represents a 18.8 per cent-increase. Transport of iron, ores and scrap showed particular strong growth.
