300,000 tons of Austria transit at Port of Rijeka

Port of Rijeka reported declining goods throughput in 2008

In 2008 the Croatian seaport of Rijeka handled 12.4 million tons of cargo, which is 6 per cent less than in 2007. This is mainly due to strong declines in the product groups “Liquid Bulk Cargo” (minus 16 per cent to 6.36 million tons) and “Timber” (minus 15 per cent to 2.76 million tons). Around 75 per cent of the total volume had their departure and destination points in Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, southern Poland and Austria. Goods handled for Austria weighed 300.000 tons in total.

“The voestalpine Group shipped 60,000 tons of rail tracks from Rijeka to South Africa. Exportations of Austrian saw mills and timber merchants to North Africa amounted to around 5,000 TEU. The Austria paper industry is also a regular customer“. Bojan Hlaca, Executive Director of the Port of Rijeka Authority, said when speaking to the LogEASTics journal. Hungary, with an annual volume of 3 million tons and 20,000 TEU per year, is the port’s biggest partner in the European hinterland.
