500.000 TEU in Port of Koper for the first time ever

Container handling in Slovenian port Koper is on target for the 600.000 TEU mark in 2011:

The Slovenian seaport Koper consolidates its position as "homebase" of the leading contianer terminal in the "Northern Adriatic" region in 2011. At the beginning of the week the annual turnover exceeded the 500.000 TEU mark for the first time. Until the end of the year a total volume of nearly 600.000 TEU is to be expected, Luka Koper d. d. announces in a press release.

An important factor for the new record is the increase of container traffic on the connections from the Far East to Koper and back. At present there are two scheduled operations per week which are operated by six shipping lines (Maersk Line, CMA CGM, Hanjin Shipping, HMM Hyundai Merchant Marine, Yangming and UASC).

The container terminal in the Port of Koper was set up in 1979 and has been expanded step by step since then. In 1980 the container handling volume reached a total value of 37.831 TEU. Ten years later, that is in 2011, this number amounted to 93.187 TEU.
