Intermodal traffic on growth course in Austria

Intermodal traffic road/rail volume from, to and through Austria could double until 2025:

Intermodal traffic road/rail remains a growth market in Austria. Until 2025 the transport volume could increase by 40 per cent to 37 million tons with consistent basic conditions. In an ideal case scenario this means that with improvements in rail infrastructure, a doubling of the transport volume to 47 million tons is within the realm of possibility. DI Andreas Käfer, general manager of Verkehrsplanung Käfer GmbH (Vienna – Salzburg), presented these figures at the CombiNet-conference 2011 dealing with the topic "Intermodal transport as the driving force behind Austria’s added value". His forecast is based on the assumption that the gross domestic product (GDP) will increase by an average 2 per cent per year.

In 2008 23 million tons of goods were transported in intermodal transport road/rail from, to and through Austria. This equals about 5 per cent of the total cargo transport in the country. Cargo traffic exceeding distances of more than 250 km accounted for 15 per cent or almost 18 per cent when seen in relation to haulage capacity.
