OOCL announces declining throughput on the Asia-Europe routes

Container line OOCL from Hong Kong registered increases in volume and sales revenue in the first half of 2011:

 

The figures for the first half of the year 2011 of the Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) show the first sign of the latest challenge for the liner shipping industry. The enterprise based in Hong Kong presented figures that were marked by the start of operation of many new newbuildings. This is documented by the load factor of the fleet, which has dropped 5.7 per cent compared to the first six months of the previous year, as well as by the decline in sales revenues of 0.9 per cent per TEU.

OOCL’s container vessels carried 2.44 million TEU in the reporting period, which means a 9.4 per cent-increase on the previous year. The volume on the routes between Asia and Europe has risen 13.3 per cent to 420,746 TEU; volume on the transatlantic routes rose 6.3 per cent to 187.408 TEU. In total sales revenues show an increase of 8.5 per cent to USD 2.74 billion. The Intra Asia/Australia route and the Trans-Atlantic route have accounted considerably therefore, plus 19.1 per cent and plus 18.4 per cent, respectively. Turnover in Asia/Europe trade dropped 7 per cent to USD 561.6 million in the period from January to June 2011, compared on the previous year’s results.
