Considerable increase in cargo throughput at Port of Antwerp

Belgian seaport of Antwerp registers “hausse“ in steel and “baisse“ in paper/cellulose segment in first half of the year 2011:

 

The growth in cargo throughput at the Belgian seaport of Antwerp was continued throughout the first half of the year 2011. In the period from January to June 96 million tons of sea freight passed the quay walls. “This means a year-on-year increase of 10.4 per cent“, the port operator announces in a press release.

In the conventional/breakbulk segment volume rose 16.9 per cent to 6.4 million tons in the reporting period. Steel experienced particularly strong growth of 48 per cent to 4.4 million tons. The volume of paper and cellulose in turn was down by 44.5 per cent to 400,000 tonnes.

Container transport was up by 4.3 per cent in the reporting period to 53 million tonnes or 4.4 million TEU. In the ro/ro sector the port of Antwerp experienced an expansion of 15.8 per cent, to 2.1 million tonnes. The number of cars handled rose by 19.1 per cent, with 526,841 cars being loaded or unloaded during the past six months.
