Accelerated growth with HHLA group

Business development of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG beats expectations in the thrid quarter

The recovery of throughput and transport volumes of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has further accelerated in the course of the 2010 business year. In the first nine month throughput volume at the container terminals in Hamburg and Odessa amounted to 4.3 million TEU in total, which is 15.4 per cent above the previous year’s level.

Turnover of the listed group division port logistics, the core business of HHLA, amounted to EUR 770 million in the period from January to September 2010; 6.2 per cent above last year’s figure. EBIT rose 9.9 per cent to EUR 131.3 million. The port logistics division has thus generated 97 per cent of the group’s turnover and about 93 per cent of the group’s EBIT.

For the full year 2010 HHLA expects an increase of the throughput volumes of more than 15 per cent, sales revenues of more than EUR 1 billion and an EBIT of approximately EUR 180 million. For 2011 the Management expects further growth in turnover and sales, given the planned time schedules for the deepening of the navigation channel of the Elbe-river and a stabilising economic recovery.

“The strong economic recovery from spring 2010 onwards continued and strengthened in the third quarter. After the first nine months of 2010, revenue and profit for the Group as a whole are for the first time distinctly higher than the previous year’s figures. Admittedly, there are signs of a slackening in the world economy and world trade in the fourth quarter. Nevertheless, and despite the continuing risks of a reverse, for instance from excessive public debt and currency risks, we are currently witnessing a stabilization and normalization in long-term growth trends,” stated Klaus-Dieter Peters, Chairman of the HHLA Executive Board, when presenting the interim report for the months January to September 2010.
