After a record year 2014: Port of Hamburg has a desire for more

Port of Hamburg achieves its best-ever throughput in the year 2014; and sees a jump in container services with China once again
Hamburg’s port industry reckons with a further climb in throughput of seaborne cargo. “By the end of 2015 the total could reach 149 million tons, with the 10 million TEU mark achieved for containers. Further growth in seaborne foreign trade with core markets is however essential for achievement of these figures“, announced Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM)’s Executive Board in presenting the port’s 2014 results.

In 2014 the Port of Hamburg set a new record for seaborne cargo handling. Never before had such cargo volumes been loaded and discharged in the port. The total throughput of 145.7 million tons represents growth of 4.8 per cent compared to the previous year.

Up by 6.1 percent at 102.7 million tons (+ 6.1%), general cargo throughput was outstanding. A 1.7 percent increase in bulk cargo throughput to 43 million tons (+ 1.7 %) also contributed to the new record for Germany’s largest universal port.

At 9.7 million TEU, Hamburg’s container throughput achieved a gain of 5.1 per cent, remaining the growth driver. Strong growth in container throughput is primarily attributable to a 9.8 per cent jump in container services with China, with around 3 million TEU. Among Hamburg’s Top Ten trading partners were Poland with 395,000 TEU (up by 22.6 per cent) and India with 232,000 TEU (up by 14.9 per cent).

Throughput of non-containerized general cargo reached 2 million tons (up by 3.8 per cent) in 2014. Growth was fuelled by exports of iron, steel, paper and timber, and a notable 19.6 per cent increase in imports of tropical fruit that reached 188,000 tons.
