APL boss sees urgent need to increase freight rates

Shipping lines have to raise charges and cut costs from APL’s view

The shipping of containers must become more expensive on all routes. This was pointed out by Eng Aik Meng, President of the APL container shipping company (Singapore), in a speech in southern China. Price adjustments shall include all trade segments, the shipping company’s manager confirmed in his statements. Furthermore he considered continuous initiatives to reduce costs for liner shipping to be very important.

According to the Head of APL the container shipping industry is currently experiencing a bad situation. “On many routes freight rates don’t even cover costs for the vessels in use“, the Manager confirmed the complaints of his colleagues from the industry.
