Asiana Airlines freighter crashes

An Asiana Airlines 747 freighter operated by a crew of two crashed in the East China Sea off South Korea at around 04h00 this morning.

The aircraft departed Incheon International Airport at approximately 03h00, bound for Shanghai, China. Approximately an hour into the flight, the pilot reported mechanical problems, and alerted airline dispatchers and air traffic controllers that there was a cargo fire, and requested an emergency landing at Jeju International Airport.

Within ten minutes the aircraft disappeared from radar screens. The plane crashed into the East China Sea about 120 km west of Jeju airport.

The coast guard has recovered part of an Asiana Airlines wing, life jackets and parts of a pilot seat. The two pilots are still missing.

According to an AP report, the freighter was transporting computers, semiconductors, resin solution and paint, among other items. Other reports indicate that lithium batteries were also part of the cargo on board.

Asiana Airlines said the cargo had been loaded in line with international air transport regulations.
